Fils d'un père assyrien, Frederick Abraham (garagiste né Farid Ibrahim et qui a américanisé son nom en entrant aux États-Unis3), et d'une mère américaine d'origine italienne4, Joséphine Stello, il étudie à l'université du Texas à El Paso avant de suivre des cours de théâtre aux HB Studios à New York, dans le quartier de Greenwich Village. Il entame sa carrière professionnelle en 1965 à Los Angeles dans la pièce de Ray Bradbury, The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit. Il joue également dans des publicités pour gagner sa vie3. Il tourne son premier film en 1971 : Le Rivage oublié de Anthony Harvey. Dans Scarface (1983) de Brian De Palma, il joue Omar Suarez, l'homme de main d'un caïd local, avant de recevoir l'Oscar du meilleur acteur en 1985 pour son interprétation d'Antonio Salieri, le compositeur italien admirateur et jaloux du talent de son concurrent Mozart, dans Amadeus de Miloš Forman. L'année suivante, il fait partie de la distribution du Nom de la rose, dans lequel il incarne l'inquisiteur Bernard Gui, adversaire du moine Guillaume de Baskerville, interprété par Sean Connery. Il enseigne l'art dramatique à l'Off-Theater de Broadway depuis de nombreuses années. Il est également professeur de théâtre au Brooklyn College3. Il est marié à Kate Hannan depuis 19625 et est père de deux enfants, Mick and Jamili. L'origine de son pseudonyme a longtemps prêté à conjectures (son premier prénom aurait ainsi été Fahrid4 ou Frank) jusqu'à ce que l'acteur indique qu'il n'avait qu'un seul prénom et qu'il s'agissait uniquement d'un hommage à son père (prénommé Frederick en anglais)1,2, imaginé pour donner un peu plus de relief à un nom « passe-partout »6. Quant à son prénom, il s'agissait initialement de Mir-Ay, celui de son grand-père paternel mort en Syrie, et qui a été américanisé en Murray3. Chrétien qui a pris ses distances avec l'orthodoxisme qu'il juge trop conservateur, il reste pour autant très croyant. Dans sa jeunesse, il a été enfant de chœur et a été marqué par le rituel religieux, à tel point que cela aurait selon lui guidé son amour du théâtre. Il n'est cependant jamais allé en Syrie, déplacement interdit par le régime car ayant déjà séjourné en Israël. À propos de ses origines, il déclare en 2016 : « Aujourd'hui, être chrétien en Syrie, c'est comme être juif dans l'Allemagne nazie »3. Politiquement, il critique plusieurs personnalités du Parti républicain lors des primaires du parti en vue de l'élection présidentielle de 2016, notamment les propos de Donald Trump, « d'un tel racisme » ou ceux de Ted Cruz, « c'est la même chose : un discours de haine »
