Né en 1973 à Yokohama, au Japon, Tadanobu Asano a fait ses débuts au cinéma dans Swimming Upstream (1990) et s'est depuis forgé l'une des carrières les plus internationales parmi les acteurs japonais, collaborant avec des cinéastes de renom au Japon, en Asie, en Europe et à Hollywood. Figure incontournable du cinéma d'art et d'essai japonais, il a collaboré avec les réalisateurs les plus célèbres du pays, notamment Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nagisa Oshima, Shinji Aoyama (Eureka, 2000 — Prix FIPRESCI à Cannes), Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Vers l’autre rive, 2015 — Prix du meilleur réalisateur de la section Un Certain Regard à Cannes), Koji Fukada (Harmonium, 2016 — Prix du jury de la section Un Certain Regard à Cannes) et Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi, 2003 — Lion d’argent à Venise ; Kubi, 2023). Il a remporté le prix Upstream du Meilleur Acteur à Venise pour Last Life in the Universe (2003, réalisé par Pen-Ek Ratanaruang), ainsi que le prix du Meilleur Acteur au Festival international du film de Moscou pour My Man (2014, réalisé par Kazuyoshi Kumakiri). Parmi ses rôles internationaux, on peut citer le rôle principal dans Mongol (2007) de Sergei Bodrov, nominé aux Oscars, les films Thor (2011-2017) de l'univers cinématographique Marvel, et Silence (2016) de Martin Scorsese, entre autres. Tout récemment, il a été acclamé pour son interprétation de Lord Kashigi Yabushige dans la série Shōgun (2024) diffusée sur FX. Rôle qui lui a valu le Golden Globe du Meilleur Acteur dans un second rôle à la télévision et a été nominé aux Primetime Emmy Awards — une première historique pour un acteur japonais dans cette catégorie.
