Il a été révélé en incarnant les rôles-titres de Will Hunting et Il faut sauver le soldat Ryan. Il a ensuite été à l'affiche de la trilogie Ocean's (Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen) et de la série de film Jason Bourne (La Mémoire dans la peau, La Mort dans la peau, La Vengeance dans la peau et Jason Bourne). Il est également apparu dans des longs-métrages comme Syriana, Les Infiltrés.
