Alors étudiante en art dramatique et élue Miss Beverly Hills, Mariska Hargitay se lance dans le cinéma en 1985 et apparaît dans les films "Ghoulies" et "Star 80". Mais c’est réellement la télévision qui va la révéler au grand public. Apparaissant dans les séries "Downtown" et "Falcon Crest", l’actrice obtient son premier rôle de policière dans "Tequila et Bonetti" en 1992. Mariska Hargitay joue également dans quelques épisodes des séries "Alerte à Malibu", "Urgences" et "Seinfeld". En 1999, alors âgée de 35 ans, Mariska Hargitay endosse le rôle qui va la consacrer : l’inspecteur Olivia Benson dans la série "New-York Unité Spéciale". Depuis 13 ans maintenant, l’inspecteur résout de nombreux crimes à caractère sexuel. Ce personnage, pour lequel elle a remporté notamment un Globen Globe et un Emmy Awards, va l’inciter à un véritable engagement. En 2004, Mariska Hargitay fonde la Joyful Heart Foundation en soutien aux femmes victimes de violences sexuelles. Elle participe à différentes campagnes luttant contre ce fléau et soutient également la sensibilisation aux greffes d’organes.
