Jane Fonda, née à New York le 21 décembre 1937, est une actrice et une productrice américaine, également écrivaine, féministe et militante pacifiste. Elle est la fille de l'acteur Henry Fonda, la sœur de Peter Fonda et la tante de l'actrice Bridget Fonda. Elle fait ses débuts à Broadway en 1960 dans la pièce There Was a Little Girl, pour laquelle elle reçoit sa première des deux nominations aux Tony Awards, avant de débuter la même année au cinéma avec la comédie La Tête à l'envers. Elle obtient une renommée au cinéma dans les années 1960 avec L'École des jeunes mariés (1962), Un dimanche à New York (1963), Cat Ballou (1965), Pieds nus dans le parc (1967) et Barbarella (1968), ce dernier film étant réalisé par Roger Vadim, son mari de l'époque. Son travail d'actrice est souvent remarqué, comme en témoignent les prix prestigieux qu'elle a reçus. Elle est par deux fois récompensée de l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice, sur un total de sept nominations; ainsi que deux fois lauréate d'un BAFTA. Parallèlement, elle obtient huit Golden Globes, dont le Cecil B. DeMille Award en 2021. À la télévision, sa prestation dans le téléfilm Les Poupées de l'espoir lui permet d'obtenir un Emmy Award en 1984. En 1982, elle sort sa première vidéo d'exercices physiques, Jane Fonda's Workout, devenue la vidéo la plus vendue de l'époque. Ce sera la première des 22 vidéos d'entraînement publiées par elle au cours des 13 années suivantes, qui se vendront au total à plus de 17 millions d'exemplaires. Divorcée de son deuxième mari Tom Hayden, elle épouse le magnat des médias Ted Turner en 1991 et se retire du métier d'actrice. Divorcée de Turner en 2001, Jane Fonda fait son retour en tant qu'actrice avec son premier film en quinze ans, la comédie Sa mère ou moi (2005). Ses films suivants sont Georgia Rule (2007), Le Majordome (2013), C'est ici que l'on se quitte (2014) et Youth (2015). En 2009, elle retourne à Broadway après une absence de 45 ans, dans la pièce 33 Variations, qui lui vaut une nomination aux Tony Awards, alors que son rôle récurrent dans la série dramatique d'HBO The Newsroom (2012-2014) lui vaut deux nominations aux Emmy Awards. Elle diffuse également cinq autres vidéos d'exercices entre 2010 et 2012. Entre 2015 et 2021, elle joue dans la série originale de Netflix Grace et Frankie. Jane Fonda est aussi activiste politique: pacifiste à l'ère de la contre-culture pendant la guerre du Vietnam, elle est photographiée assise sur un canon antiaérien lors d'une visite en 1972 à Hanoï, puis proteste contre la guerre d'Irak.
